A tattoo does not disappear. It loses contrast. Those are different problems with different causes, and only one of them is under your control.

Why the ink stays

Research published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine showed that dermal macrophages capture tattoo pigment, and that pigment can move through cycles of capture, release and recapture without the tattoo disappearing. That mechanism helps explain both why tattoos persist for decades and why removing them is difficult.

So permanence is not really the question. Contrast is.

Ultraviolet light

The American Academy of Dermatology states that UV light can fade tattoo inks, and recommends broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30+ applied before exposure and reapplied at least every two hours. It also advises avoiding tanning beds and sunlamps, which can fade ink and raise skin cancer risk.

A systematic review of tattoo pigment chemistry adds a second reason to take UV seriously: photolytic degradation of pigments — by sunlight or by laser — may generate degradation products of their own. Sun protection is not only a cosmetic argument.

The skin above the ink

You are always looking at pigment through living tissue. Dermatology describes the skin barrier as four interdependent layers — physical, chemical, microbiologic and immunologic — and describes how moisturisers support it: occlusives reduce water loss, humectants draw water, emollients integrate into the stratum corneum.

Transepidermal water loss — the water that evaporates through skin continuously, without you noticing. A barrier in good condition loses less of it. Stratum corneum is the outermost layer of that barrier: the flat, already-dead cells you can actually touch.

Well-hydrated skin is more even and less light-scattering than dry, flaking skin. That is a statement about the surface, not about the pigment underneath it.

Petroleum

The AAD's guidance for tattooed skin is specific: if the skin feels dry, apply a water-based lotion or cream, and it notes that petroleum-based products can cause ink to fade. Worth knowing, given how often petroleum jelly is handed out as default advice.

What we cannot tell you

There is no published figure for how much contrast a given tattoo will lose over a given number of years. Pigment chemistry, placement, skin tone, sun history and style all interact, and the literature does not resolve them into a prediction. What it does support is narrow and actionable: manage UV exposure, keep the skin barrier in good condition, and treat anything more specific than that with suspicion.
