The Second Layer
beneath tattooed skin
Six territories: the skin beneath the work, the ritual around it, the products used, the craft itself, the culture that shaped it, and what is happening now.
Tattoos live beyond the surface. The Second Layer brings together credible information about tattooed skin, responsible products, professional artistry and the people and ideas shaping tattoo culture.
Tattoo advice travels quickly. Its sources do not always travel with it. Some guidance is supported by evidence, some comes from experience, and some is repeated so often that nobody remembers where it started.
This is where we publish what we know, how we know it, and what remains unsettled — whether or not it involves anything we sell.
the skin
What is happening biologically?
Ink sits in the dermis while the surface above it continually renews. We examine tattooed skin through dermatology, published research and clearly identified sources — including what the evidence cannot yet tell us.
the ritual
What should someone consider at each stage?
Four stages: prep, create, recover and nourish. What the skin may need at each one, what you can control, and how to build a useful ritual — whether you use our products or not.
the product
What goes on or into the skin — and what can we prove?
Three branches: what is in tattoo ink, what is in a formula and why, and the standards behind how products are made. Ingredients by name, claims tied to evidence, and nothing we cannot substantiate.
the craft
How is tattooing actually performed and experienced?
The work itself — from preparing the station and navigating a long session to artist–client communication and life behind the chair. Built from documented practices, artist experience and conversations with the people doing the work.
the culture
What does tattooing mean, and where did it come from?
Soot, ash and plant-derived pigments appear among the earliest documented tattoo materials. We explore where styles originated, what the marks carry, and how an ancient practice continues to change.
on the record
What is happening now, and what is our position?
One headline. The context behind it. Our position — on the record. Research, regulation, recalls, misinformation and cultural moments that deserve a closer look.
