Before the Needle

01 prep · before your tattoo

your tattoo starts with the skin it goes into.

most tattoo care begins after the appointment. preparation begins before it. here’s the short version of what to do in the week before, the day before and the morning of, plus what to have ready.

the honest purpose of prep: arrive with intact skin, steady energy and no preventable reason your artist should shorten, change or postpone the session.

prep can’t guarantee a particular result. technique, placement, your skin and aftercare all matter. what it can do is remove avoidable friction, from sunburn and razor irritation to an empty stomach.

the week before

keep the skin stable

  • confirm the date, arrival time, session length, placement and deposit terms.
  • keep the area out of the sun. no tanning, waxing, peels or aggressive exfoliation.
  • if the skin is dry, moisturize morning and night with one familiar product.
  • skip new actives, self-tanner and fragranced treatments on the placement.
  • tell your artist about medications, allergies and any past reactions to adhesives.
  • plan clothing, transport and the first few days after the session.
the day before

reduce variables

  • sleep and eat normally. prepare food if the session is long.
  • no alcohol or recreational drugs. arriving impaired compromises consent.
  • shower as usual. don’t scrub the area or try new products.
  • don’t shave unless your artist asks you to. most prefer to do it themselves.
  • pack id, payment, water, a snack, a charger and a clean loose layer.
the morning of

arrive clean and ready

  • eat a familiar meal and drink water normally.
  • keep caffeine to your usual amount.
  • arrive with clean, dry skin and no product on the placement.
  • check the area in good light. message your artist before you travel if anything changed.

your artist’s instructions always come first. the art is theirs. the preparation is yours.

questions people actually ask

before your appointment

do i need a separate tattoo prep product?

no. a plain, fragrance-free moisturizer can also help condition dry skin before an appointment. the prep cream was made specifically for this stage, and the prep bundle adds the soothing cream so the next stage is ready when you get home.

should i moisturize the morning of my tattoo?

follow your artist’s instructions. most want the placement clean and free of lotion or oil so they can prepare the skin and apply the stencil. manage dryness in the days before, not minutes before.

should i shave before a tattoo appointment?

not unless your artist asks you to. home shaving can leave small cuts, razor burn or inflamed follicles the day before the session.

can i use the prep cream after my tattoo?

no. it’s intended for intact skin before the appointment. afterward, follow your artist’s instructions. the soothing cream is the ancient ink formula made for the early-care stage.
